Times Square
Times Square Valentine Heart
Our office is composed of first generation immigrants. To love as an immigrant requires to belong and belonging thrives from expression, recognition and ownership. This design is a gesture of belonging. Times Square is both an intersection of major streets in Manhattan and an intersection of the world. The form and function of the design highlights this aspect. The installation is comprised of two 22' L X 11' H walls intersecting in the middle at 90 degrees. The center of both walls has a heart shape cut out, creating four quadrants with a heart shape in the middle. Either side of both walls is covered with a skin of reversible sequins. One side of the skin is finished with brushed metal and the other with a mirrored, red metal. As visitors brush their hands over the skin, the sequins flip from one side to the other, inviting interaction and allowing people to write words on all sides of the heart. The design invites visitors to express their love – from names of loved ones to statements of passion.
