Ross Bleckner at Sevil Dolmaci Gallery
The Ross Bleckner exhibition was installed in a 19th-century Greek merchant’s home in Istanbul, a second-degree historical building. Bleckner’s paintings—meditations on loss and memory during the AIDS crisis in the 1980s—were intentionally positioned against the villa’s decaying plaster walls. Because the historic fabric could not be touched, thin metal bars were suspended between existing wood door frames to support the artworks. Larger paintings were hung from freestanding metal poles, allowing the contemporary works to be situated within the historic rooms with care and restraint.
A new reading table/bench was designed for the exhibition to provide a reading room for visitors in front of the original fireplace.
Our work on this project reflects a strong commitment to preserving both the integrity of the physical space as well as the community's access to the artwork and its history.
