Participant Inc.
Founded in 2001, Participant Inc. is an educational corporation and not-for-profit alternative exhibition space. After more than fifteen years in the Lower East Side, the organization relocated to a 3,000 sf space at 116 Elizabeth Street to launch a multi-year initiative aimed at strengthening its programming and building a more sustainable future. The new space reimagines Participant’s workspace while expanding public access to its archives, artist estates, and exhibitions. This phase of the project focused on unifying the exhibition and estate programs under one roof – a design approach that reflects Participant's evolving mission to support experimental artistic practices and promote cultural transformation. The result is a living repository of intergenerational memory, bridging historical preservation with contemporary engagement.

Upon entry, a wide ramp ensures accessible movement into the main space. Aligned with the ramp, the interior is organied into two distinct zones: one side area for archives, artist estates, and workspace; the other to exhibitions.

A modular steel frame with expanded metal infill provides storage for archival and estate materials while maintaining visual and physical connectivity with the exhibition area. The design fosters a fluid relationship between preservation, production, and participation, creating a spatial framework that sustains cultural memory, encourages experimentation, and expands access to collective knowledge.
