Artists Foundation
In 2014, B-KD was commissioned to develop a master plan for 250 acres of land upstate for artist Richard Prince’s foundation. The plan includes a studio, gallery and art storage, library, artist-in-residence facilities, and a visitor center. The project began with a single building and is designed to grow over time as the foundation evolves and consolidates.
The first building—a 5,000 sf gallery and art storage facility—tucked between two traditional barns, was completed in August 2015. This new structure is a carefully detailed modern barn, the area's most prevalent agricultural typology, that employs passive building technologies while thoughtfully referencing the proportions and materials of traditional structures found in the local context.
The design challenges conventional typologies by addressing both the private needs of artists and the public’s experience of art. The open-plan space acts both as an art storage, as well as a gallery. Through this hybrid approach, the foundation anchors the site within its local environment while extending its role as a catalyst for connection and community.
