Paul Pfeiffer at MOCA Geffen
Paul Pfeiffer's first U.S. retrospective at the MOCA Geffen Contemporary brings
together era-defining photo and video works alongside his latest experiments in sculpture and installation. B-KD was tasked to design the 22,000sf exhibition in the cavernous space of the Geffen Contemporary.
Modeled after a studio soundstage, the exhibition design is inspired by the artists’ interest in Hollywood Filmmaking's highly fabricated and labor-intensive process. Three white cube galleries at the entrance welcome visitors into a conventional art viewing space. Behind these galleries, the main warehouse space reveals itself as a large open volume where a series of wood-framed structures, built with conventional 2X6 wood framing, are carefully arranged to house large video works, installations, and photography. On an adjacent space, a raised platform is designed with the same construction techniques to wrap Pfeiffer’s monumental work – ‘Vitruvian Figure.’ A ramp and stair wrap around the platform to guide viewers up onto the platform.
